"The avalanche risk as a vector for a new urban organization"

At the bottom of the valley between two very steep mountain sides, Chamonix stretches out lengthwise. Transport networks and infrastructure cross the city longitudinally in a narrow, contained city that can only extend in the direction of the valley. The excessive urbanization of the 1970s and 1980s placed many residential areas on the fringes of mountain slopes, a particularly dangerous area subject to the risk of avalanches. It is proposed here a process of transformation of the city directly linked to the landscape of the valley and the mountain and, more particularly, to the landscape of the corridor of the avalanche: on the one hand, to welcome the avalanche in order to better manage it, on the other hand, to inhabit the protective devices with housing or equipment. How to protect these neighborhoods, how to secure the town planning of the Chamonix valley while responding to land pressure and the growing housing needs for locals?
